Anabazenops

Anabazenops is a genus of birds in the Furnariidae family, commonly known as ovenbirds. These birds are found in South America. The genus currently contains two recognized species. Anabazenops are generally medium-sized birds with relatively long tails. They exhibit a drab brown plumage, often with some rufous or tawny coloration on their wings or underparts. Their beaks are typically stout and somewhat decurved, adapted for foraging in bark and leaf litter.

The distribution of Anabazenops species is primarily within the Atlantic Forest and adjacent regions of eastern Brazil. They inhabit humid lowland forests and forest edges. Their diet consists mainly of insects and other arthropods, which they glean from tree bark, branches, and the forest floor.

The two species within the genus are the White-shouldered Antshrike (Anabazenops fuscus) and the Rufous-backed Antshrike (Anabazenops dorsalis). While they share general characteristics, subtle differences in plumage and vocalizations distinguish them. Their nesting behavior is typical of furnariids, often involving the construction of enclosed nests made of plant material, though specific details can vary between species. Conservation status for Anabazenops species is a concern, with habitat loss being a significant threat due to deforestation in their native ranges.
