AmbientIntensity

AmbientIntensity is a scalar factor used in computer graphics to control the strength of the ambient lighting component in a lighting model. Ambient lighting represents indirect, scattered light that has been reflected many times in a scene, and it helps prevent surfaces from appearing completely dark in areas not directly lit by a light source. The ambientIntensity parameter scales this contribution to suit a particular scene or artist’s intent.

In typical shading equations, the ambient term may be written as a product of the material’s ambient reflectance, the scene’s ambient light, and the ambientIntensity factor. For example, ambientColor can be the material’s ambient reflectance, I_a the ambient light intensity or irradiance, and ambientIntensity a multiplier: ambient = ambientColor × I_a × ambientIntensity. In many engines, ambientIntensity is exposed as a float and combined with a global ambient color or irradiance map to adjust the overall brightness of ambient illumination.

Common ranges for ambientIntensity are 0.0 to 1.0 in simple lighting setups, where 1.0 provides full ambient contribution and 0.0 removes it. In HDR workflows, values can exceed 1.0 for artistic effects or physically based approximations that include environment lighting or irradiance textures.

Modern rendering often replaces a single ambient term with more physically based approaches, such as image-based lighting (IBL) and ambient occlusion, where ambient contribution is derived from environment maps and occlusion data. Nevertheless, ambientIntensity remains a useful, simple knob in many traditional shaders and real-time engines.
