Amarantes are a Portuguese indie rock band formed in Lisbon in 2003. The group consists of four members: João Pedro Marques (vocals, guitar), João Pedro Oliveira (bass), Nuno Rego (guitar), and João Pedro Marques (drums, though he is also credited as the primary vocalist). The band’s name is derived from the Portuguese word for "amaranth," a type of flower known for its resilience and vibrant color.

Amarantes gained prominence in Portugal before achieving international success, particularly in Europe and Latin America. Their music blends indie rock with elements of post-punk revival, new wave, and alternative rock, characterized by catchy melodies, dynamic instrumentation, and emotionally charged lyrics. Albums like *Amarantes* (2006), *Fotografias* (2008), and *Onde Estivemos* (2010) helped solidify their reputation, with hits such as "Aqui Estou Eu" and "Fotografias" becoming fan favorites.

The band’s breakthrough came with *Onde Estivemos* (2010), which included the single "Aqui Estou Eu," a song that resonated widely across Europe. Their 2013 album *Amarantes* (often referred to as *Amarantes III*) further expanded their global reach, featuring the hit "Aqui Estou Eu" and "Fotografias." The band’s lyrics often explore themes of love, heartbreak, and personal struggles, delivered with a mix of raw energy and poetic depth.

Amarantes have released several studio albums, including *Amarantes* (2016), *Amarantes* (2019), and *Amarantes* (2022), each maintaining their signature sound while evolving musically.
