Alopiidae
Alopiidae is a family of lamniform fishes commonly known as thresher sharks. This family contains a single extant genus, Alopias, which comprises three recognized species: the common thresher (Alopias vulpinus), the pelagic thresher (Alopias pelagicus), and the bigeye thresher (Alopias superciliosus). These sharks are characterized by their remarkably long, scythe-like upper tail fin (caudal fin), which can be as long as the rest of their body. This distinctive tail is used to herd and stun prey, which typically consists of small schooling fish and squid.
Thresher sharks are found in temperate and tropical waters worldwide, inhabiting both coastal and oceanic environments.
