Aloitusmenetelmät, or starting methods, refer to the techniques and procedures used to initiate the operation of an engine or machine. These methods are crucial for ensuring a safe and efficient startup, preventing damage to the equipment, and minimizing energy consumption.

In internal combustion engines, common starting methods include electric starters, manual pull-starts, and air starters. Electric starters, the most prevalent in modern vehicles, use an electric motor powered by the battery to crank the engine until it begins to run on its own. Pull-starts, typically found in smaller engines like those in lawnmowers or chainsaws, involve manually rotating the engine crankshaft using a cord or handle. Air starters, used in larger industrial engines, employ compressed air to spin the engine.

For electric motors, starting methods are designed to manage the high inrush current that occurs when power is first applied. Direct-on-line (DOL) starting is the simplest, applying full voltage directly to the motor. Reduced voltage starting methods, such as star-delta starters or soft starters, are used to limit this current, reducing mechanical stress and energy waste.

In industrial processes and complex machinery, a sequence of operations is often followed for a safe startup. This typically involves pre-operation checks, priming of systems, gradual application of power, and monitoring of critical parameters like pressure, temperature, and speed.
