A pull start, also known as a recoil starter, is a common mechanism used to start small internal combustion engines. It consists of a spring-loaded spool that engages with the engine's crankshaft. When the starter cord is pulled, the spool unwinds, turning the engine over. As the cord is released, the spring rewinds the spool, disengaging it from the engine and returning the cord to its original position.

The operation of a pull start relies on a few key components. A rope, often made of nylon or a similar durable material, is attached to the spool. A handle is affixed to the end of the rope for the user to grip. Inside the housing, a coiled spring, known as a recoil spring, is responsible for retracting the rope and spool. A ratchet or pawl mechanism typically engages the spool with the engine's flywheel or crankshaft pulley, allowing the engine to be turned over.

Pull starts are widely used in a variety of applications where portability and simplicity are desired. They are commonly found on lawnmowers, chainsaws, leaf blowers, generators, and small outboard motors. The convenience of not requiring an external power source or complex electrical system makes them a popular choice for many consumer-grade engines. While generally reliable, pull starts can eventually wear out or break, often requiring replacement of the rope, spring, or entire recoil assembly.
