Allopolyploidy refers to a process in plant evolution where two or more different species hybridize, producing a sterile offspring that then undergoes chromosome doubling to become fertile. This phenomenon results in a new species with a combined genetic makeup from its parental species, known as an allopolyploid. The term "allopolyploid" combines "allo," meaning "other," and "polyploid," indicating multiple sets of chromosomes.

The formation of allopolyploids typically begins with hybridization between closely related but distinct species, often due to environmental changes, human intervention, or natural genetic isolation. The hybrid offspring usually exhibit reduced fertility because their chromosomes do not pair correctly during meiosis, leading to the production of non-viable gametes. However, if the chromosome number doubles—either through nondisjunction (failure of chromosomes to separate during cell division) or through hybridization with another hybrid—fertility is restored. This process creates a stable polyploid genome with two or more complete sets of chromosomes from different species.

Allopolyploidy is a significant driver of speciation in plants, contributing to biodiversity. Many well-known crops, such as wheat (*Triticum aestivum*), cotton (*Gossypium hirsutum*), and canola (*Brassica napus*), are allopolyploids that arose through this mechanism. These species often exhibit enhanced traits, such as increased size, disease resistance, or adaptability to new environments, which can provide evolutionary advantages.
