Allergitrening

Allergitrening, also known as allergy training or immunotherapy, is a medical treatment aimed at reducing a person's sensitivity to specific allergens. It involves gradually exposing the individual to increasing doses of the allergen under medical supervision. The goal is to desensitize the immune system, so it no longer overreacts to the allergen, thereby alleviating allergy symptoms.

This treatment is typically prescribed for severe or persistent allergies that significantly impact a person's quality of life and do not respond well to conventional treatments like antihistamines or avoidance measures. Common allergies treated with immunotherapy include those to pollen, dust mites, animal dander, and insect venom.

There are two main forms of allergitrening: subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT), commonly known as allergy shots, and sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT), which involves placing drops or tablets of the allergen under the tongue. SCIT involves regular injections, usually starting with weekly doses that gradually increase, and then progressing to monthly maintenance doses. SLIT is often administered daily at home after the initial doses are given under medical supervision.

The duration of allergitrening can vary, but it typically lasts for several years to achieve long-lasting relief. While generally safe, potential side effects can occur, ranging from mild local reactions at the injection site or in the mouth to, in rare cases, more severe allergic reactions. Therefore, it is crucial to undergo this treatment under the care of a qualified allergist or immunologist. Allergitrening is not suitable for everyone and a thorough evaluation is necessary to determine its appropriateness.
