In the context of RVs, an Alkoven is an over-cab sleeping area, a bed that extends from the vehicle's cabin over the driver's and passenger's seats. This design creates an additional sleeping space, often a double bed, without significantly increasing the vehicle's overall footprint or wheelbase.

The primary advantage of the Alkoven design is its efficient use of space. It provides a dedicated sleeping area that can be accessed from within the vehicle, offering a convenient sleeping spot for children or adults. This feature is particularly popular in family-oriented RVs. Furthermore, the raised position of the Alkoven bed can sometimes offer a good view from the sleeping area.

However, Alkovenmodelle also come with certain drawbacks. The extended upper profile of the vehicle increases its overall height, which can limit access to some low-clearance areas, such as parking garages or certain campsites.
