Alagútszer

Alagútszer is a Hungarian term used in civil engineering to refer to the equipment and systems employed in tunnel construction and related underground works. The term covers a range of machinery, tools, and subassemblies used for excavation, ground support, lining, and environmental control during the life cycle of a tunnel. In technical practice, alagútszer may denote both large, industrial tunneling machines and the associated support technology that makes tunneling possible.

Excavation methods and the core components of alagútszer include mechanized tunnel boring machines (TBMs), roadheaders, drilling rigs, and, in some rock conditions, traditional drill-and-blast setups. The excavation work is supported by temporary or permanent support systems such as rock bolts, sprayed concrete (shotcrete), steel sets, and, in many cases, segmental or precast concrete lining. These elements are designed to maintain ground stability, control settlement, and protect workers during construction.

Lining and finishing are critical parts of alagútszer. Segmental concrete linings provide a continuous, watertight shell for the tunnel, while alternative solutions may use cast-in-place concrete or sprayed coatings. Waterproofing, drainage, ventilation, and monitoring systems are integrated to ensure long-term safety and operability of the tunnel. Ground improvement and grouting may also be employed to reduce settlements and control groundwater.

Historically and today, alagútszer encompasses the evolution from manual excavation to complex, mechanized systems. Its use spans subway and road tunnels, hydropower and utility tunnels, mining passages, and other underground infrastructure projects. The term is primarily used in Hungarian-language technical literature and generally aligned with the broader concept of tunneling equipment in international practice.
