Hungarian is a Uralic language spoken primarily in Hungary and several neighboring countries. It serves as the official language of Hungary and is one of the European Union's official languages. With approximately 13 to 14 million native speakers, Hungarian is the largest non-Indo-European language spoken in Europe by number of speakers.

The language belongs to the Finno-Ugric branch of the Uralic language family, making it distantly related to Finnish and Estonian. Hungarian speakers can also be found in Romania, Slovakia, Serbia, Ukraine, and Austria, as well as in diaspora communities worldwide, particularly in the United States, Canada, and Australia.

Hungarian is notable for its complex grammar system, featuring 18 grammatical cases and extensive agglutination, where suffixes are added to word stems to express grammatical relationships. The language's vocabulary has been influenced by various sources throughout history, including Turkic, Slavic, German, and Latin languages, though its core structure remains distinctly Uralic.

The earliest written records of Hungarian date back to the 11th century, though the language was primarily oral before this period. The modern Hungarian alphabet uses the Latin script with additional characters and diacritical marks. Significant literary works in Hungarian began appearing in the 16th century, with the language achieving full literary status during the 18th and 19th centuries.

In contemporary times, Hungarian faces challenges related to language preservation and modernization. Efforts to maintain the language include educational programs, media broadcasting, and cultural initiatives. The Hungarian Academy of Sciences plays a crucial role in linguistic research and standardization of the language.

Despite its relatively small number of speakers globally, Hungarian maintains official status in Hungary and holds cultural significance for Hungarian communities worldwide. The language continues to evolve while preserving its unique grammatical characteristics and rich literary tradition.
