Afkøle

Afkøle is a Danish verb meaning “to cool down” or “to reduce temperature.” It is derived from the noun “køling,” which itself comes from the Scandinavian “køle” (to cool). The word is commonly used in everyday Danish to describe the process of cooling food between cooking steps, letting a vehicle’s engine reach a lower operating temperature, or describing the experience of a hot beverage cooling naturally. In technical contexts, afkøle relates to HVAC systems, refrigeration units, and industrial heat transfer. Engineers describe a cooling process as “afkøling” in Danish, where the focus is on thermodynamic principles such as heat capacity, thermal conductivity, and cooling curves.

In everyday applications the verb can be used literally and figuratively. For example, a person might say “Lad kaffekoppen afkøle i et par minutter” (“Let the coffee cup cool down for a few minutes”) or “Efter en lang kørsel har opvarmede bremserne afkølet sig selv” (“After a long drive the heated brakes cooled themselves”). Figuratively, it can describe someone taking a break or relaxing after stress, e.g., “Han tog et par minutter af at køre og afkølede sine tanker.” The verb and its noun form are often used in Danish design and marketing copy, such as “Air‑conditioner der afkøler rummets temperatur” (“Air‑conditioner that cools the room’s temperature”).

The concept of afkøle intersects with physics. When exchange of heat occurs between a hotter body and a cooler environment, the higher temperature body undergoes afkøling until thermal equilibrium is reached.
