Adheesioliitokset, commonly known as adhesive bonding, refers to the process of joining two or more surfaces together using an adhesive material. This method is widely used across various industries, including automotive, aerospace, construction, and electronics, due to its ability to create strong, durable, and often aesthetically pleasing joints. Adhesives work by forming a molecular bond with the surfaces being joined, distributing stress over a larger area compared to mechanical fasteners.

The selection of an appropriate adhesive is crucial and depends on factors such as the materials to be joined, the intended application, environmental conditions, and required bond strength. Common types of adhesives include epoxies, cyanoacrylates (super glues), polyurethanes, silicones, and acrylics. Each type possesses unique properties regarding curing time, flexibility, temperature resistance, and chemical resistance. Surface preparation is a critical step in adhesive bonding. The application of the adhesive can be manual or automated, and the curing process, where the adhesive hardens and forms the bond, can be initiated by various methods, including ambient temperature, heat, UV light, or the mixing of reactive components. Adhesive joints offer several advantages, such as joining dissimilar materials, creating a smooth surface finish, sealing against environmental factors, and providing vibration damping. However, they can also have limitations, including sensitivity to temperature extremes, potential for degradation over time, and difficulties in disassembly.
