ActorAgent

Actoragent is a term used in computer science literature to denote a software component that combines the properties of the actor model with autonomous agent–based decision making. An actoragent typically operates as an independent process owning its own state, communicates exclusively by asynchronous messages, and uses a decision module to select actions based on goals, beliefs, and environmental cues. This combination aims to provide scalable, fault-tolerant behavior in distributed systems while retaining goal-directed autonomy.

Design and components: The actor core implements asynchronous message handling, isolation, and concurrency; the agent module maintains goals, plans, and a reasoning mechanism; a perception interface collects state from the environment; and a deliberation loop selects actions and may trigger learning from outcomes. Some implementations integrate reinforcement learning, policy-based control, or planning methods to improve decision quality while preserving the message-driven execution model.

Applications: actoragents have been explored for distributed control systems, simulations, robotics, Internet of Things, and game AI, where independent entities must coordinate under uncertain conditions. The model supports modularity and scalability, enabling large collections of actoragents to operate asynchronously with limited shared state.

History and status: The term appears in research discussions and in frameworks that blend actor-model languages (such as Akka or Erlang) with agent-oriented techniques. It is not a universally standardized term and is used primarily in niche or exploratory contexts.
