Abruzzi

Abruzzi is a historical and geographic term used to refer to the central Italian region that is today known as Abruzzo. The name has appeared in older Italian sources and in English-language references, but since the 1963 regional reorganization it is less common as an administrative designation. Before that year the term Abruzzi e Molise described the combined area, which included what is now the separate region of Molise.

Geographically, the area lies along the east coast of Italy facing the Adriatic Sea and is characterized by a striking contrast between the Apennine mountains inland and a coastal plain. The high peaks of the Gran Sasso d’Italia and the Maiella are among the best known mountain groups in the region, and several national and regional parks protect the diverse landscapes and wildlife. The present-day region of Abruzzo is subdivided into four provinces: L’Aquila, Pescara, Chieti, and Teramo. The capital is L’Aquila, while Pescara and Chieti are major population and economic centers along the coast.

History and culture in the Abruzzi area reflect a long sequence of Italic, Roman, and medieval developments, followed by incorporation into the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and, after Italian unification, the creation of separate autonomous regions. The territory is known for its rugged towns, medieval architecture, and culinary traditions, including pasta alla chitarra, arrosticini (grilled lamb skewers), and wines such as Montepulciano d’Abruzzo and Trebbiano d’Abruzzo. The 2009 L’Aquila earthquake highlighted the region’s seismic risk and prompted significant rebuilding efforts.

Economy traditionally relied on agriculture, forestry, and small-scale industry, with growing emphasis on tourism, especially outdoor recreation in the mountains and coastal areas.
