The term is sometimes encountered in clinical notes, patient information resources, or research databases as a broad descriptor when the precise diagnosis is not yet established.

Causes and pathophysiology: Abdominal inflammation may arise from infection (bacterial, viral, or fungal), autoimmune or autoinflammatory diseases, ischemic injury, chemical irritation, or postoperative complications. Inflammation can involve the peritoneum, organs, or mesenteric tissues, and may be acute or chronic. The underlying condition often drives the inflammatory response and organ dysfunction.

Clinical presentation and diagnosis: Common features include abdominal pain, tenderness, fever, nausea, vomiting, and changes in bowel habits. Diagnostic evaluation combines history and physical examination with laboratory tests (white blood cell count, inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein) and imaging (ultrasound, computed tomography). In uncertain cases, endoscopy or biopsy may be employed to identify underlying causes.

Management and prognosis: Treatment depends on the specific diagnosis but typically includes addressing infection or inflammation, supportive care (fluids, analgesia), and targeted therapies such as antibiotics or corticosteroids. Surgical intervention may be necessary for emergencies (appendicitis, perforation, obstruction). Prognosis varies with etiology, ranging from self-limited inflammatory processes to chronic or life-threatening conditions.
