ANSIbased

ANSIbased is an adjective used to describe products, systems, or practices that conform to standards published or recognized by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). ANSI is a U.S. non-profit organization that coordinates national standardization and accredits standards development processes. ANSI itself does not write every standard; rather, it approves and publishes American National Standards that are developed by accredited standards development organizations (SDOs).

The term applies across many domains, including information technology, safety, electrical engineering, construction, accessibility, and quality management. Examples of areas associated with ANSI-based compliance include safety signage standards (such as ANSI Z535) and accessibility design standards (such as ANSI A117.1). In computing and software, historical references to ANSI C reflect a role in standardization efforts that have since evolved into ISO/IEC standards.

Development and conformance follow a consensus-based process. ANSI coordinates or accredits committees, reviews public input, and ballots proposed standards before publication. Conformance may be verified through third-party testing or certification, and products or services often carry markings or declarations of compliance to indicate ANSI-based adherence.

Relation to international standards is a key aspect. ANSI serves as the U.S. member body of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). Many ANSI standards are harmonized with or adopted as ISO/IEC standards, while others remain national specifications that address U.S. legal, market, or regulatory needs.
