AHRSjärjestelmät, or Attitude and Heading Reference Systems, are electronic devices used in aircraft, spacecraft, and other vehicles to determine the vehicle's attitude and heading. They are crucial for navigation and flight control, especially in situations where visual references are limited, such as during night flying or in adverse weather conditions.

An AHRS typically combines data from several sensors. Inertial sensors, such as accelerometers and gyroscopes, measure the vehicle's rotation and acceleration. Magnetometers are used to detect the Earth's magnetic field, providing a reference for heading. More advanced AHRS systems may also integrate GPS data for position and velocity information, which can help correct drift in the inertial sensors.

The data from these sensors is processed by a computer to calculate the vehicle's pitch, roll, and yaw angles, as well as its magnetic heading. This information is then displayed to the pilot on instruments like the attitude indicator (artificial horizon) and the heading indicator. In modern aircraft, AHRS data is often fed directly into the flight control system, allowing for automated stabilization and navigation.

Compared to older electromechanical gyroscopes, AHRS systems offer several advantages. They are generally more reliable, require less maintenance, and are less susceptible to instrument errors caused by excessive G-forces or unusual attitudes. Their solid-state nature also makes them more robust. AHRS technology has evolved significantly, with current systems often being integrated into a single unit known as an Air Data Attitude Heading Reference System (ADAHRS) that also processes air data like airspeed and altitude.
