ABSplast

ABSplast is a class of engineered thermoplastic resins based on acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) designed to deliver improved impact resistance and thermal stability relative to standard ABS. It comprises an ABS backbone with specialized impact modifiers and stabilizers, and may include flame retardants or UV stabilizers in some grades. The designation covers a range of formulations tuned for different performance goals, from general-purpose housings to automotive or electronic components.

Properties and processing of ABSplast grades typically include enhanced notched impact strength, improved heat resistance, and better surface finish compared with conventional ABS. They retain compatibility with common processing methods used for ABS, including injection molding and extrusion, and some grades are formulated for additive manufacturing or 3D printing with equivalent process temperatures. The exact properties vary by grade and additives, but the aim is to deliver tougher, more stable parts without sacrificing processability.

Applications for ABSplast span automotive interior and exterior components, electrical and electronic enclosures, consumer appliances, and durable consumer goods. It is used where higher toughness, better heat resistance, and cleaner surface aesthetics are advantageous, as well as for rapid prototyping and end-use parts produced by standard thermoplastic equipment.

Availability and safety: ABSplast is produced by multiple plastics suppliers as a family of ABS-based blends and is available in pellets for molding and extrusion, as sheets, or as filaments for various 3D printing processes. Recycling is possible through established ABS streams, with appropriate handling. Processing requires standard polymer safety practices, including adequate ventilation to manage fumes during heating.
