1529 was a year in which European political and religious life was shaped by military conflicts, imperial diplomacy, and the early stages of the Protestant Reformation. Among the notable events were the Ottoman siege of Vienna, the Diet of Speyer in the Holy Roman Empire, and the Treaty of Cambrai between France and the Holy Roman Empire.

The Ottoman siege of Vienna began in late September 1529 as Suleiman the Magnificent sought to extend Ottoman influence into Central Europe. The defenders—led by local nobility and the city’s garrison—held out for several weeks, and the Ottoman forces eventually withdrew. The failure to capture Vienna marked a turning point, halting the Ottoman advance in Central Europe and shifting the balance of power in the region.

In the Holy Roman Empire, the Diet of Speyer (April–May 1529) addressed religious and political tensions generated by the Reformation. Although the assembly sought to regulate doctrine and practice, it provoked strong opposition from reform-minded princes and cities. On April 19, 1529, the Protestation at Speyer articulated a formal protest against the diet’s decisions, giving rise to the term Protestant and signaling the emergence of organized Protestant identities within the empire. The proceedings also temporarily allowed limited Lutheran religious practice in certain territories under princely authority.

The Treaty of Cambrai (1529) brought a pause in the Italian wars between Francis I of France and Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor. The agreement ended hostilities in northern Italy and laid groundwork for future European diplomacy, influencing the balance of power and the conduct of Catholic and reformist actors in the subsequent decade.
