Üledéktan is the science that studies sediments and sedimentary rocks, including their origin, transport, deposition, and subsequent alteration known as diagenesis. It aims to reconstruct past environments, climate, and the timing of geological events from the sedimentary record. By analyzing grain size, mineralogy, fossil content, and sedimentary textures, üledéktan helps interpret where sediments came from, how they were moved, and the settings in which they were deposited, ranging from rivers and deltas to deserts and deep oceans.

Historically, sedimentology developed alongside stratigraphy and sedimentary geology in the 19th and 20th centuries, advancing through field mapping, core analysis, and the concept of facies. Modern practice integrates geochemistry, mineralogy, and sedimentary petrology with sequence stratigraphy to interpret complex sedimentary sequences and their diagenetic histories, as well as to correlate rocks across distances.

The field encompasses multiple subdisciplines, including clastic and carbonate sedimentology, depositional environments, lithofacies analysis, diagenesis, and paleoenvironments. Researchers employ field observations, borehole cores, grain-size distributions, petrography, and various analytical techniques to reconstruct transport processes, energy conditions, and temporal sequences. The work often combines outcrop studies with subsurface data from wells and seismic surveys.

Applications of üledéktan are broad. It underpins hydrocarbon exploration and reservoir characterization, informs groundwater and aquifer management, and supports environmental geology and paleoclimatology. Sedimentary rocks such as sandstones, shales, limestones, and evaporites record a wide range of environments, including rivers, deltas, lakes, coastal shelves, and deep-sea basins, preserving a detailed history of Earth’s surface processes.
