Üldvalku is an Estonian term used in molecular biology to describe a general, constitutively expressed protein that serves as a normalization reference in protein assays, such as Western blotting. The concept corresponds to what is commonly called a loading control or housekeeping protein in English-language literature.

Etymology and meaning: the word combines üld-, meaning general or overall, with valk, meaning protein. As a category, üldvalku does not designate a single protein but rather a class of proteins deemed suitable as internal standards due to stable expression.

Role and characteristics: a üldvalku is expected to be expressed at relatively constant levels across different samples, tissues, and experimental conditions. Its primary function in experiments is to compensate for technical variation, including differences in sample loading, transfer efficiency, and detection sensitivity.
