útlíma

Útlíma is a term of Old Norse origin, often translated as "outcast" or "exile." In the context of Norse society, it referred to an individual who had been formally expelled from their community and stripped of their rights and protections. This expulsion was a severe social and legal punishment, rendering the útlíma outside the bounds of law and custom.

The reasons for becoming an útlíma could vary, but they generally involved serious transgressions against the community or its laws. These might include committing grave crimes like murder, theft, or treason, or violating sacred oaths and social taboos. The process of becoming an útlíma was often a formal declaration made by a Thing, a public assembly. Once declared an útlíma, an individual forfeited their right to legal defense, property, and social standing. They could be killed with impunity by anyone, and any assistance offered to them was also a punishable offense. This extreme measure served as a powerful deterrent against societal disruption and reinforced the importance of communal bonds and adherence to established norms in Viking Age Scandinavia. The status of útlíma was therefore one of complete social and legal negation.
