Õiguskaitseorganitel (legal protection bodies) refer to state institutions responsible for upholding the law, ensuring justice, and protecting citizens' rights in Estonia. These organizations operate under the rule of law and are tasked with investigating crimes, prosecuting offenders, and safeguarding constitutional principles.

The primary legal protection bodies in Estonia include the police, the Prosecutor General’s Office, and the courts. The Police and Border Guard Board (Riigipoliisi ja Piirivalve Amet) is the main law enforcement agency, responsible for maintaining public order, preventing and combating crime, and protecting national security. Its activities are guided by the Police and Border Guard Act, ensuring compliance with human rights and fundamental freedoms.

The Prosecutor General’s Office (Sõjaväeprokuratuur and Riigiprokuratuur) oversees criminal investigations, represents state interests in court proceedings, and ensures the proper application of the law. Prosecutors play a key role in the criminal justice system by initiating proceedings, reviewing evidence, and ensuring fair trials.

The judiciary, comprising the Supreme Court, the Court of Appeal, and district courts, interprets and applies the law. Courts resolve disputes, adjudicate criminal cases, and ensure that legal decisions align with constitutional norms. Judicial independence is a cornerstone of Estonia’s legal system, safeguarded by the Constitution and international treaties.

Other legal protection bodies include the Office of the Ombudsman (Inimõiguste Valitsus), which monitors compliance with human rights and freedoms, and specialized agencies such as the Financial Police (Rahanduspolitsioon), which investigates financial crimes. These institutions collaborate to maintain a robust legal framework that balances individual rights with public security.

The activities of these bodies are subject to oversight by parliamentary committees, the Constitutional Review Board, and international bodies like the Council of Europe. Transparency and accountability are central to their operations, reinforcing public trust in Estonia’s legal system.
