The term comes from érv (argument, reason) and vonal (line), and is used to describe how a writer or speaker organizes justification to make a point clear and persuasive.

Lines of argument can be classified by their logical form. Deductive érvonalak aim for necessity: if the premises are true, the conclusion follows with certainty. Inductive érvonalak draw general conclusions from specific observations, offering support that is probabilistic rather than guaranteed. Abductive érvonalak seek the best explanation for the available data, often used when multiple hypotheses could fit the facts. In practice, a single discourse may weave multiple lines of argument to reinforce a central claim.

Construction of an érvonal typically follows a sequence: state a clear claim, present relevant premises and evidence, connect each premise to the conclusion, and address potential counterarguments. Clarity, relevance, and sufficiency of evidence are essential, as is avoiding logical fallacies that can undermine the line of reasoning.

In scholarly writing and debate, explicitly outlining the érvonalak helps readers evaluate the argument’s coherence and strength. They also facilitate comparison between competing positions by highlighting distinct premises and inferential steps.
