These physical grooves were then traced by a stylus to reproduce the sound.

The advent of magnetic tape revolutionized audio recording. Magnetic tape allowed for the storage of sound signals as variations in magnetic field strength on a plastic tape coated with magnetic material. This enabled easier editing and duplication of audio. Analog audio recording, whether on tape or vinyl records, preserves sound as a continuous waveform, mirroring the original sound pressure variations.

Digital audio recording marked a paradigm shift. Instead of a continuous waveform, analog sound is converted into a series of discrete numerical values through a process called analog-to-digital conversion (ADC).
