Äänirekisteröinti, often translated as voice registration or vocal register, refers to a series of tones in the human voice produced by a particular vibratory pattern of the vocal folds and the resulting resonance. Different registers are characterized by distinct physiological mechanisms and acoustic qualities.

The most commonly recognized registers are chest voice, head voice, and falsetto. Chest voice is typically produced with the vocal folds thick and shortened, resulting in a sound that feels resonant in the chest cavity and is generally perceived as powerful and rich. This is often the speaking voice. Head voice is produced with the vocal folds thinner and longer, with a different vibratory pattern, and the resonance feels more prominent in the head. This register is often associated with higher pitches and a lighter, brighter sound.

Falsetto is a higher vocal register that can be produced by both men and women. In falsetto, the vocal folds are very thin and may vibrate only at the edges, or not fully close. This results in a weak, breathy, and often flute-like tone. The physiological difference between head voice and falsetto is a subject of ongoing discussion and varies between vocal pedagogy traditions.

The transition between these registers is called the passagio or break. Skilled singers train to smooth out these transitions, creating a seamless vocal line. Understanding and manipulating vocal registers is fundamental to vocal training and singing technique, allowing singers to access a wider range of pitches and achieve different vocal colors and expressive qualities.
