An äänipreampia, often simply called a preamp, is an electronic amplifier that boosts a relatively weak electrical signal to a level that is more suitable for further processing or amplification. In audio applications, preamps are crucial for preparing low-level signals, such as those from microphones or musical instruments, for input into a power amplifier or recording device. The primary function of a preamp is to increase the signal voltage without introducing significant noise or distortion.

Microphones, for instance, produce very low-level output signals. A microphone preamp raises this signal to a "line level," which is a standardized signal strength that most audio equipment can handle. Without a preamp, the signal from a microphone would be too weak to be effectively used. Similarly, some instruments, like electric guitars with passive pickups, benefit from a preamp to boost their signal before it reaches an amplifier or effects pedals.
