Áfengi is the Icelandic term for intoxication or drunkenness, typically resulting from the consumption of alcoholic beverages. In medical and legal contexts, áfengi denotes the temporary impairment of judgment, coordination and perception caused by ethanol. The degree of intoxication depends on factors such as the amount and speed of consumption, body weight, age, sex, and food intake. Acute intoxication can lead to accidents, injuries, and alcohol poisoning; chronic or repetitive use may contribute to alcohol use disorder and long-term health problems including liver disease, cardiovascular issues and mental health effects.
