Ühendusjuhtmeid, literally "connection conductors," are the fundamental elements that enable electric current or digital signals to travel between devices in electrical and data transmission systems. In practice these conductors are bundled inside cables that may carry power, voice, data, or video signals, and they form the backbone of most networking and telecommunications infrastructures.

The most frequently used conductors are made of copper, either stranded or solid wire, though aluminium and silver‑plated metals also appear in high‑voltage or cost‑sensitive applications. For optical data transmission, fibre‑optic conductors—glass or plastic cores that carry light—replace conventional metal conductors. Copper is prized for its low electrical resistance and high conductivity; aluminium offers a lighter, cheaper alternative and is often used in power transmission. Fibre‑optic cables provide very high bandwidth and immunity to electromagnetic interference, making them ideal for long‑haul or high‑density data links.

In telecom installations, connection conductors appear in twisted‑pair, coaxial, and fibre‑optic cabling. Twisted‑pair supports speeds up to 100 Mbps over 100 metres, coaxial can carry several hundred megabits, and fibre enables gigabit speeds over tens of kilometres. The connectors attached to these conductors—such as RJ45 for twisted‑pair, RJ11 for telephone, SC or LC for fibre—provide reliable physical coupling between network equipment.

Installation and maintenance of connection conductors follow international standards, such as IEC 60228 for conductor specifications, ISO/IEC 11801 for cabling infrastructure, and ANSI/TIA‑568 for telecom premises cabling. Proper strain relief, shielding, grounding, and cable routing protect signal integrity and safety. Regular testing with tools like time‑domain reflectometers ensures performance remains within specification and extends cable life.
