Übernässung

Übernässung is a German term that translates to waterlogging or oversaturation in English. It describes a condition where soil becomes saturated with water, preventing adequate aeration. This can occur due to excessive rainfall, poor drainage, or high water tables. When soil is übernässed, the air pockets within the soil become filled with water, limiting the oxygen available to plant roots and soil organisms.

The consequences of übernässung can be detrimental to plant life. Lack of oxygen inhibits root respiration, leading to stunted growth, yellowing leaves, and increased susceptibility to diseases. In severe cases, prolonged waterlogging can cause root rot and plant death.
