These structures are commonly found in Iceland, where harsh maritime conditions and unstable geological formations pose significant risks to infrastructure, settlements, and natural landscapes.

The primary purpose of öryggisgallar is to stabilize soil and rock formations by intercepting water runoff and reducing the impact of waves and wind. They are typically built using reinforced concrete, stone, or metal mesh, depending on the severity of the erosion and local construction practices.
