The term is common in German-speaking contexts and is sometimes translated as oil kettle or oil heater in English.

Construction and heating methods: Ölkesseln are typically manufactured from stainless steel or carbon steel, with sanitary designs for food applications and more rugged constructions for industrial use. They are often jacketed to enable heat transfer from steam or hot oil, or they may be direct-fired with gas or electric heating elements. Capacities vary from small pilot kettles to large industrial vessels, and they may include features such as external insulation, agitators, heating coils, or steam coils to ensure uniform temperature distribution and efficient heat transfer.

Operation and features: In batch processing, oils are heated to target temperatures for refining, rendering, frying, or processing. Agitators maintain homogeneous temperature and prevent stratification. Process controls monitor temperature, maintain setpoints, and provide safety interlocks. Many Ölkesseln are designed for clean-in-place (CIP) or sterilization cycles and include access ports, sampling lines, and connections for inert gas blanketing where required.
