Ébano

Ébano refers to a group of dense black woods belonging to the genus Diospyros. These trees are native to tropical and subtropical regions, particularly in Africa, Asia, and Madagascar. The heartwood of ebony is highly prized for its deep black color, fine texture, and exceptional hardness. This density makes it resistant to insect damage and decay, contributing to its durability.

Historically, ebony has been a valuable commodity, traded for centuries. Its unique properties made it ideal for decorative inlays, musical instruments, carving, and luxury furniture. The labor-intensive process of harvesting and preparing ebony, combined with the slow growth rate of ebony trees, has contributed to its high cost and rarity.

International trade in ebony is regulated under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) to prevent further depletion of these valuable trees.
