Äänitoisto, meaning "sound reproduction" in Finnish, refers to the process of recreating sound that has been previously recorded. This encompasses the entire chain of events from the playback of a recording medium to the sound waves reaching a listener's ears. The fundamental goal of äänitoisto is to faithfully reproduce the original audio signal, preserving its timbre, dynamics, and spatial characteristics as closely as possible.

The process typically involves several key components. A playback device, such as a turntable for vinyl records, a CD player, a digital audio player, or a computer, reads the stored audio data.
