Zaokrglenia, often referred to in standard Polish as zaokrąglania, is the process of replacing a numeric value with a nearby value that has lower precision. The goal is to simplify numbers, reflect measurement uncertainty, or prepare values for subsequent calculations. Rounding can target different forms of precision, such as integers, a fixed number of decimal places, or a specified number of significant figures.

There are several rounding methods. The most common is rounding to the nearest value, where numbers with a fractional part of 0.5 or more are increased and those with less than 0.5 are reduced. Another approach is round half to even (banker’s rounding), which ties rounds to the nearest even digit to reduce bias over many operations. Truncation or rounding toward zero simply removes digits beyond the chosen precision. Other well-known methods include ceiling (round up to the next integer) and floor (round down to the previous integer). In computing, rounding modes can be defined explicitly, for example in IEEE 754 floating-point arithmetic, which includes round to nearest, toward zero, toward positive infinity, and toward negative infinity.

Locale and representation matter. Some regions use a comma as the decimal separator, others a point, which can affect how rounding is described and applied. Floating-point representations introduce rounding errors due to finite precision, so successive rounding can accumulate small discrepancies. Practical use of zaokrglenia requires clear rules for the intended context, such as financial calculations, scientific measurements, or user interfaces, to ensure consistency and minimize bias.
