Ylävatsakipu, also known as epigastric pain, refers to discomfort or pain felt in the upper central part of the abdomen, just below the rib cage. This type of pain can have a wide range of causes, from mild and temporary issues to more serious medical conditions.

Common causes of ylävatsakipu include gastrointestinal problems such as indigestion, heartburn (pyrosis), and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). These often manifest as a burning sensation or a dull ache. Gastritis, an inflammation of the stomach lining, and peptic ulcers, sores in the stomach or duodenum, can also lead to significant upper abdominal pain, sometimes accompanied by nausea or vomiting.

Other potential causes involve the gallbladder and pancreas. Gallstones can cause sudden, sharp pain in the upper abdomen, often after eating fatty foods. Pancreatitis, inflammation of the pancreas, typically presents with severe upper abdominal pain that may radiate to the back and is often accompanied by fever and vomiting.

Less commonly, ylävatsakipu can be a symptom of heart-related issues, such as a heart attack, especially in women, where pain can be perceived in the upper abdomen. Liver conditions like hepatitis can also cause discomfort in this area. Furthermore, certain medications or even stress and anxiety can contribute to or exacerbate ylävatsakipu.

Due to the diverse nature of its origins, persistent or severe ylävatsakipu warrants medical evaluation to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment. A doctor will typically ask about the pain's characteristics, accompanying symptoms, medical history, and may perform diagnostic tests to reach a diagnosis.
