Ylinäytteenotto, or oversampling in English, is a technique used in data science and machine learning to address imbalanced datasets. Imbalanced datasets occur when the number of observations in one class is significantly lower than in others. This imbalance can lead to models that are biased towards the majority class, performing poorly on the minority class which is often the class of interest.

The core idea behind ylinäytteenotto is to increase the number of instances in the minority class. This can be achieved in several ways.
