Yksistäänkäyttäjäympäristö, often translated as single-user environment, refers to a computer system or software configuration designed for use by only one person at a time. This contrasts with multi-user environments, where multiple individuals can access and operate the system concurrently. In a single-user environment, all system resources, such as processing power, memory, and storage, are dedicated to the single active user.

Historically, many early personal computers operated in a single-user mode. Modern operating systems, even those commonly found on personal computers, are technically capable of supporting multiple users. However, when a personal computer is used by only one person without any network connections allowing others to log in remotely, it effectively functions as a single-user environment for that individual's session.

The primary characteristic of a single-user environment is the absence of user account management for concurrent access and the lack of inter-process communication mechanisms typically found in multi-user systems for user separation. While a single-user system might still have different user accounts for organizational purposes (like separating work and personal files), it does not allow simultaneous login sessions. This simplicity can lead to easier management and potentially better performance for the sole user, as there is no overhead associated with managing multiple user contexts.
