Yhdenvertaisuuslaki, commonly referred to as the Equality Act, is a Finnish law that bans discrimination and promotes equality in Finland. It covers areas such as employment, education, goods and services, housing, and public administration, applying to both private and public actors.

The act protects against discrimination based on factors such as sex, gender identity and gender expression, age, ethnic or national origin, religion or belief, language, disability, sexual orientation, and other personal characteristics. It prohibits direct and indirect discrimination as well as harassment and sexual harassment connected to these grounds.

The law obliges organisations to promote equality and to take practical measures to that end. This can include adopting equality plans, ensuring fair recruitment and promotion practices, seeking pay equity, improving accessibility, and providing anti-discrimination training. In many workplaces, larger employers are required to implement and monitor such measures.

Enforcement and remedies are provided through channels such as the Non-Discrimination Ombudsman and the courts. Individuals who believe they have experienced discrimination under the act can file complaints, and authorities may investigate, issue orders, or grant remedies, including compensation for damages.

The Equality Act is part of Finland’s framework for equal rights and anti-discrimination, and it has been amended over time to expand protections and strengthen enforcement. It operates alongside other related legislation and is administered by relevant national authorities to ensure compliance and to promote an inclusive society.
