Yellowjackets are wasps in the genera Vespula and Dolichovespula. They are eusocial insects that form annual colonies with a single queen and many workers. They occur across the Northern Hemisphere and are commonly black and yellow in appearance.

Nests are made from chewed wood fibers and saliva, forming a papery envelope that shelters brood cells. Nests may be underground, in rodent burrows, or in cavities such as trees, wall voids, or under eaves. The nest enlarges as the colony grows.

Lifecycle: In spring, a mated queen overwinters and starts a nest. The first workers become active after a few weeks, and the colony grows through summer, peaking in late summer. Late-season includes production of new queens and males; after mating, the old colony dies and fertilized queens overwinter to start new nests.

Diet and ecology: Adults feed on nectar and sugars; they provision larvae with captured insects. They help control pest populations but are also attracted to human foods. They can be aggressive near nests, delivering multiple stings if disturbed.
