Xylose-specific, or xylosespecific, is an adjective used in biochemistry and molecular biology to describe a molecule, enzyme, transporter, or recognition system that preferentially binds, metabolizes, or responds to the sugar xylose. The term conveys high selectivity for xylose over other closely related sugars such as glucose, arabinose, or ribose, though absolute specificity is uncommon in practice.

Xylosespecificity appears in several contexts. In enzymology, enzymes that act on xylose, such as xylose isomerase or related pathways, are described as xylose-specific when their activity is markedly higher for xylose than for other sugars. In transport and uptake, xylose-specific transporters or permeases facilitate the import of xylose into cells with little or no transport of alternative sugars. In regulation and sensing, xylose-responsive transcriptional regulators or biosensors are described as xylose-specific when they trigger a response primarily in the presence of xylose.

Applications and considerations. Xylose-specific systems are valuable in metabolic engineering, diagnostic assays, and inducible expression platforms where precise sugar recognition is required. However, many systems labeled as xylose-specific exhibit some cross-reactivity with related pentoses, and achieving complete discrimination can demand careful design or screening. The term is sometimes used informally to denote xylose preference rather than strict, exclusive specificity.
