Xenonvalaistus, often referred to as xenon lighting or high-intensity discharge (HID) lighting, is a type of gas-discharge lamp that produces light by an electric arc through xenon gas. This technology is distinct from traditional incandescent bulbs which rely on heating a filament until it glows. Xenon bulbs contain a capsule filled with xenon gas, metal salts, and a small amount of liquid mercury. When a high voltage is applied, an arc forms, ionizing the xenon gas and exciting the metal salts. The excited metal salts then emit light, producing a bright, white illumination.

The primary advantage of xenon lighting is its superior brightness and light output compared to halogen bulbs. This results in better visibility, especially at night or in adverse weather conditions, as the light produced is closer to natural daylight. Xenon bulbs also tend to be more energy-efficient, consuming less power for a given light output. Their lifespan is generally longer than that of halogen bulbs.

Xenon lighting is commonly found in automotive headlights, where its bright, far-reaching beam significantly improves driving safety. It is also used in some high-end projectors, stage lighting, and specialized industrial applications requiring intense illumination. While offering significant benefits, xenon systems typically require a ballast to regulate the high voltage needed to initiate and maintain the arc, which can add to the cost and complexity of the lighting setup.
