A windsock is a conical textile tube attached to a pole or tower, designed to indicate the direction and speed of the wind. It is typically used at airports, industrial sites, and sometimes on roads or bridges where wind conditions are critical. The open end of the windsock faces into the wind, and the entire sock points away from the wind's source. The material is usually made of durable fabric like nylon or polyester, treated to withstand various weather conditions.

The primary function of a windsock is to provide a simple and immediate visual cue about wind. The way the windsock hangs or blows indicates the wind direction. If the windsock is limp, it suggests calm conditions or very light winds. As the wind speed increases, the windsock inflates and extends outwards. In strong winds, it may stand out almost horizontally. Some windsocks are designed with a series of colored bands to provide a rough estimate of wind speed. These bands, often alternating colors like orange and white, represent specific wind speed ranges.
