Wielmaat is a term used in Dutch to describe the size of a wheel, primarily its rim diameter. In everyday usage it may refer to the wheel diameter or to the overall wheel and tire assembly, and it is used to ensure compatibility between rims and tires and between wheels and vehicle hubs.

In bicycles, wielmaat commonly refers to the wheel size expressed in inches, such as 26, 27.5, and 29. The modern bicycle wheel sizes correspond to specific bead seat diameters (BSD): 559 mm for 26-inch wheels, 584 mm for 27.5-inch (650B) wheels, and 622 mm for 29-inch (28-inch) wheels. The actual rolling diameter also depends on tire choice, since tire width and profile alter the outer diameter. Traditional naming persists in some markets, with 26-inch wheels more common on older or specialized setups, while 27.5-inch and 29-inch wheels are prevalent on many mountain and hybrid bikes.

In motor vehicles, wielmaat often denotes the rim diameter in inches, as in 16x7.5J, with tire sizes listed separately (for example P215/65R15). Wheel size affects handling, ride comfort, gearing, and clearance around brakes and suspension. Larger rims typically allow lower-profile tires, which can improve handling but may reduce ride comfort and increase weight. Common passenger-car sizes range from about 14 to 20 inches, with larger sizes more common on some sports cars and SUVs.

Standards and compatibility are set by manufacturers and industry practices. For bicycles, ISO bead seat diameters and widely accepted rim widths govern interchangeability; for cars, bolt patterns, center bore, and offset (ET) determine whether a given wheel fits a particular vehicle.
