Weathertelling refers to the practice of predicting future weather conditions. Historically, this was done through observation of natural phenomena. These observations often included the behavior of animals, the appearance of the sky, wind patterns, and the presence of certain celestial bodies. Many cultures developed their own sets of proverbs and rhymes based on these observations to forecast weather changes, often for agricultural or navigational purposes.

Modern weathertelling, or meteorology, relies on scientific instruments and complex models. These include weather balloons, satellites, radar systems, and ground-based sensors that measure atmospheric pressure, temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction, and precipitation. These data points are fed into computer models that simulate atmospheric processes to predict weather patterns. While scientific forecasting has become highly sophisticated and accurate for short-term predictions, long-range forecasting remains more challenging due to the chaotic nature of the atmosphere. Folk weathertelling, while often lacking scientific rigor, can sometimes align with actual weather events due to predictable cyclical patterns in nature. However, its reliability is generally considered low compared to modern meteorological methods.
