A watchmaker is a craftsman who designs, builds, assembles, tests, and repairs watches. In many contexts the term also covers clockmaking, but watchmaking focuses on portable timepieces. Modern watchmakers may work independently in small studios or as technicians in larger houses, performing disassembly, cleaning, lubrication, adjustment, and regulation.

Historically, watchmaking developed in Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries, with centers in the Swiss Jura, England, and France. Early mechanisms evolved from verge escapements to more precise systems; innovations such as the fusee, balance wheel and balance spring, and the lever escapement increased accuracy and reliability. The craft combined metalworking, engraving, and decorative finishing, and evolved from guild-based workshops into modern manufacturing and private ateliers.

Practice requires high manual dexterity, attention to detail, and steady hands. Typical tasks include disassembly under loupe magnification, cleaning in ultrasonic baths, inspecting for wear, fabricating or replacing parts, reassembly, lubrication, and timing regulation using timing machines and precision measuring tools.

Training often proceeds through formal apprenticeships or specialized horology programs, culminating in journeyman status and, in some traditions, mastery. In Swiss, German, and French traditions, professional schools teach metrology, material science, and assembly techniques alongside practical internships.

In the contemporary market, watchmaking blends traditional hand finishing with modern technologies. Mechanical watches and haute horlogerie remain a niche for enthusiasts and collectors, while quartz and smart devices dominate mass production. Independent watchmakers and restoration specialists continue to preserve vintage pieces and design new models.
