Výstavba is the process of constructing buildings and infrastructure, from initial planning through design, permitting, procurement, erection, and completion. In Czech and Slovak usage, the term denotes the development and expansion of the built environment and is often used to refer to the construction sector as a whole, as well as to the construction of a particular project, such as housing, roads, or factories.

The scope includes residential, commercial, industrial, and public infrastructure, and involves both private developers and public authorities. Key activities include feasibility studies, architectural and engineering design, securing permits, tendering and contracting, on-site management, quality control, safety, testing, commissioning, and handover, followed by maintenance.

Participants span investors or owners, project developers, architects, structural, mechanical and electrical engineers, contractors, inspectors, and regulatory authorities. Projects are governed by building codes, zoning regulations, environmental rules, and procurement laws. Common delivery methods include traditional design-bid-build, design-build, and public-private partnerships.

Sustainability and innovation are increasingly central. Trends include energy-efficient designs, green building certifications, digital tools such as Building Information Modeling (BIM), prefabrication and modular construction, and lifecycle assessment. Safety, labor standards, and risk management are critical considerations throughout the project lifecycle.

Economically, the výstavba sector influences employment, urban development, and regional growth, with funding from private investment and public budgets, including regional and European funds in many countries. The pace and focus of výstavba are shaped by planning policies, market demand, and macroeconomic conditions.
