Výrastky, also known as osteophytes, are bony outgrowths that can develop on bones. They are commonly associated with aging and degenerative changes in joints, such as osteoarthritis. These formations typically arise at the edges of bones where cartilage has worn away, and the underlying bone reacts by growing extra bone tissue.

The formation of osteophytes is a complex biological process, often triggered by inflammation, mechanical stress, or injury to a joint. While they are a characteristic feature of osteoarthritis, their presence does not always correlate with the severity of symptoms. Some individuals with significant osteophyte formation may experience little to no pain, while others with smaller osteophytes might have considerable discomfort.

Osteophytes can vary in size and shape. They may be small, rounded bumps or larger, more irregular growths. While often asymptomatic, they can sometimes cause pain by irritating surrounding soft tissues like tendons or nerves, or by restricting joint movement. In certain joints, such as the spine, osteophytes can lead to conditions like spinal stenosis.

Diagnosis of osteophytes is typically made through imaging techniques like X-rays, CT scans, or MRI. Treatment is generally focused on managing symptoms rather than removing the osteophytes themselves, as surgical removal is not always indicated or effective. This may involve pain relief medication, physical therapy, or lifestyle modifications to reduce stress on the affected joint.
