Training covers anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, surgery, and clinical skills. After graduation, licensure is typically required, involving examinations and adherence to professional ethics; many pursue internships or residencies for specialty training.

Practice and specialties: Routine care includes examinations, vaccinations, preventive medicine, nutrition advice, and diagnostics using imaging, laboratory tests, and pathology. Surgical procedures and anesthesia are common duties, along with dentistry and emergency care. Specialists focus on internal medicine, surgery, dermatology, ophthalmology, oncology, dentistry, or other fields; veterinarians may also work in research or public health roles.

Public health and welfare: The profession contributes to animal welfare and disease control, supports food safety through herd and flock health programs, and engages in zoonotic disease surveillance. Ethical considerations include humane treatment and responsible antimicrobial use. Global training standards, professional associations, and continuing education help coordinate practice and advance veterinary science.
